Knobbed Russet Apple Tree
Knobbed Russet apple is also known as Knobby Russet, Old Maid’s Winter, Winter Apple, and Winter Russet. It’s a green and yellow fruit, sometimes scarlet streaked in the sun. Its uneven surface is overlaid with rough grey and black russet, welts, and knobs—hence the name! But beauty is more than skin deep in this case, as the Knobbed Russet has crisp, rich, sugary, highly flavored flesh. It ripens late in the season. Originated in Sussex England. It was rescued from oblivion when the National Fruit Trials was put together after World War II. Introduced in 1819.
Rootstock: G969: 12-15ft, 15 ft between trees. Semi-dwarf, 12-15ft, resistant to fire blight, crown rot, and woolly apple aphid with good cold hardiness.

Region of Origin: Sussex, England, 1819
