Black elderberry (sometimes referred to as Elder) prefers moist, well-drained soil. However, it can tolerate nearly any soil conditions from periods of standing water to sandy, drier locations. This shrub is a showstopper. Berries are highly medicinal and mildly toxic raw but make excellent jams, jellies, and syrups.
