A great plant to reduce topsoil erosion and reduce soil compaction. Big Bluestem is the first choice for grazing animals. It has been called, “Ice Cream for Cows”. Due to its delectability it has been nearly grazed to extinction in the tallgrass prairies by introduced cattle. Until the relatively recent advent of barbed-wire it thrived with the migration of bison, being able to regenerate as the bison moved. Once cattle were introduced and confined, Big Bluestem declined in numbers, and with it the animal life that depended on it. Tallgrass prairies are considered to be one of the most, if not the most threatened ecosystem in the world. Do your part and help replenish what was stolen from the world.
